I am one of the unfortunate PC gamers to be blessed with a HT processor, a HT processor isn’t really for gaming because very few developers actually take advantage of it. Those that do take advantage result in better performance, graphics, etc and those that don’t result in, well the opposite.
I had to search long and hard to find a solution to this problem, but at last I think I may have found it to help out fellow HT gamers. A program that prioritize’s cores, such as CPU Control, is all you need. All you need to do is turn HT on via your bios, and let CPU Control run in the background.
Rest assured, I have done my trials so I am getting this “knowledge” from somewhere. I ran a bunch of my old games such as KotOR 2, WC 2, Bloodrayne, etc under Vista, before they would have problems such as crashing, performance issues, etc. After enabling CPU Control I can safely say that none of these issues had existed. I also tried it with GRAW 2, a much newer game, I was able to get a small performance increase with it. I’m gonna try it with Crysis and UT 3 in a bit, ill post my findings.
HT isn’t all bad, if a program supports it that is. Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista support it so you will get a increase in performance. However this does not mean that all your programs run in that OS will also benefit, which is why programs like CPU Control will help.
Intel said their newer duo core chip sets will eventually get HT, lets hope that works out better.
